Like today, American trade catalogs in the 19th century were printed by American merchants to advertise, and sell, their goods. Here, Philadelphia publisher and bookseller George G. Evans advertises his extensive catalog of published book titles. Such trade catalogs are now rare. Collections The American Antiquarian Society aims to collect one example of everything printed in what was once British North America before the year (and a few collections extend through ), as well as select manuscripts. In two centuries of collecting, AAS has accumulated some four million items towards that comprehensive goal and continues to add to these holdings.
