The Order states that the Secretary of the Interior shall, “give full consideration to revising the schedule of proposed oil and gas lease sales so that it includes, but is not limited to, annual lease sales, to the maximum extent permitted by law, in the Western Gulf of Mexico, Central Gulf of Mexico, Chukchi Sea, Beaufort Sea, Cook Inlet, Mid-Atlantic, and South Atlantic.”. Walrus sightings in the Beaufort Sea have consisted solely of widely scattered individuals and small groups. For example, while walrus have been encountered and are present in the Beaufort Sea, there were only five sightings of walrus between [deg] and [deg] W. during annual aerial surveys conducted from to

The NOBLE DISCOVERER will be engaged in exploratory drilling operations at various locations in the Chukchi and/or Beaufort Seas on or about July 1, through Novem The DRILLSHIP will be anchored while conducting exploratory drilling operations with the center point of the vessel located at the coordinates listed in Table 1. The Frontier Discoverer drilling rig shown at Dutch Harbor, Alaska, in Imperial Oil Canada, Exxon Mobil and BP have jointly filed an application to drill at least one well in the Beaufort.

As mentioned in the Part 1 of this article, in the s and 80s onshore development and rising oil prices in Alaska and the Northwest Territories led the U.S. and the Canadian governments to allow, and even push for, several exploratory drillings in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas.

A number of books have been written relating to petroleum exploration in the Beaufort Sea and the Canadian High Arctic offshore, some are narratives telling the stories by journalists, others textbooks outlining methods for calculating ice loading from various ice conditions. This book.

The Beaufort general permit will authorize discharges from exploratory operations in all areas offered for lease in the Beaufort Sea, including past leases and lease sale areas that might be offered in the immediate future (i.e., in the next 5 years). Lease sales in the next 5 years (i.e., and ) are expected to occur in the Area of Coverage.

Seasonal offshore drilling in the Canadian Beaufort Sea from a floating vessel has been approved in principle and is scheduled to be undertaken during the open water period of The results of the studies discussed will be used to set operating constraints to safeguard the environment and minimize any adverse : John Hnatiuk.

Nine exploratory wells have been drilled previously in the Beaufort Sea during the open water period using floating drilling units. The Kulluk, one of the drilling units to be used by Shell, was used to drill 5 of these wells. Drill ships, similar to the Frontier Discoverer.

A considerable amount of information and knowledge was gained during the exploration phase of the Beaufort Sea during the s through to the s. Shell’s Beaufort Sea Exploratory Drilling Program Oil Spill Response in Ice Prepared for: Shell Exploration and Production Co.

The National Energy Board (NEB) records show Canadian Arctic offshore wells have been drilled, with 92 of these wells drilled in the Beaufort Sea region.

Historical well records show that the industry operated in an extremely harsh environment, where drillships were often. The Beaufort Sea is clearly one of the world's most hostile environments for oil exploration and development. Ice condi-tions can make drilling a nightmare.

The polarice packcrowdsin uponthewatersof thecontinental shelf, and heavy, mo-bile ice which forms each winter over all but the shallower waters ofthe shelf itself often.

The Molikpaq is a steel caisson structure that was used in the s in the Canadian Beaufort Sea for exploration drilling of oil and gas. It was very extensively instrumented. The Nikaitchuq North Exploration Drilling Project is in federal OCS water of Harrison Bay and Beechey Point areas of the Beaufort Sea, off Alaska.

The exploration project is about 6mi offshore from Eni’s SID and approximately 10mi from Oliktok Point. Since the Beaufort Sea Beluga Management Plan has been in place, companies have elected, in the interim, to refrain from proposing programs which infringe on the Zone 1(a) areas, respecting the recommendation on petroleum operations in that plan pending clarification of conservation measures and operational restrictions within these areas.

@article{osti_, title = {The Concrete Island Drilling System: Super Series (Super CIDS)}, author = {Wetmore, S B}, abstractNote = {This paper outlines the design development of a modular, stackable, gravity drilling platform for year-round usage in the Beaufort Sea. The specific concerns and unique design parameters that led to the concept are set forth.

Discharges of WBM and cuttings from Beaufort Sea exploratory wells have been comprehensively monitored (Neff et al., ; Brown et al., ).

The results of these studies are consistent with the conclusion of the NRC report on drilling discharges in. Shell Oil is now drilling wells in two Arctic seas off Alaska's northern coast. Drilling began Wednesday afternoon in the Beaufort Sea after the end of an Inupiat whale hunt, according to Curtis.

Royal Dutch Shell is a very large company with extensive expertise in drilling for oil in difficult places deep underwater. Deep ocean oil drilling technology has advanced dramatically over the last twenty years.

The average depth of the Beaufort sea is 1, meters. Deep water oil drilling offshore in Brazil is 2, meters down (Economist story). The drilling would be the first in federal Arctic waters since Royal Dutch Shell in sent down an exploratory well in the Chukchi Sea off Alaska’s northwest coast.

Robert LeMeur was an icebreaking platform supply vessel used to support oil exploration in the Beaufort in by Burrard Yarrows Corporation in Vancouver, British Columbia, she was part of the fleet of Canadian icebreakers, drillships and support vessels operated by Canadian Marine Drilling (Canmar), the drilling subsidiary of Dome Petroleum and later Amoco Canada Petroleum Company.

The last company to drill in the Beaufort was Devon Energy inbut several major energy players, including BP and Exxon Mobil, plan to commence exploratory drilling several years from usly, belugas were protected under a relatively toothless regime called the Beaufort Sea Beluga Management Plan, which only set forth voluntary. At around p.m., Shell began drilling with the Kulluk, a conical drilling rig, over its Sivulliq prospect some 20 miles offshore in the Beaufort Sea, Smith said.
